Nikki and Zuzie had been seriously harbouring the dream to open a cafe for at least 18 months before finding the location for LWC. We spend a lot of time jumping in the car after work to check out potential properties and loads of racing about East London. Finally one day Nikki looked out of the window of her Hackney Road flat – and there it was like magic- a ‘FOR LEASE’ sign right across the road.

LWC was once one of the many handbag shops monopolizing Hackney Road! Originally it was a long very thin walkway with massive shelves, slowly and gradually we have shaped it into the café and gallery space it is. We opened our doors on June 16th with an opening party and private view for the first LWC exhibition. The very next day, somewhat hungover (and a little late) Nikki opened at 9am and started serving coffee! We haven’t looked back since then!

Nikki Stewart is a Kiwi who has been living in London for the last 15 years. She is the driving force behind LWC and is well loved on Hackney Road (having lived in this patch for a decade!) She throws her extensive hospitality experience in cafes, restaurants, kitchens and bars into making this place the great place it is. Nikki loves cooking and is often seen by the grill making tasty brunches!

Zuzie Poskitt prior to LWC was a project manager. She led teams for charities and builders in re-furbing properties. Zuz loves redeveloping and is always hatching a plan to make LWC a little better. She has guided the LWC from a handbag shop into a busting café and gallery. Her favourite colour is pink and she often dashes off to Suffolk to jump on a horse!
